Diabetes (July 2007, Week Vol. 30)

Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
Jul-29-2007
Alternate Names : Insulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, IDDM, Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Overview, Causes, & Risk Factors Type 1 diabetes mellitus, more commonly known as type 1 diabetes, is a disease in which the pancreas produces too little insulin to meet the body’s needs. Insulin is a hormone that helps control the level of glucose in the blood. Glucose is the main form of sugar in the body. see Type 1 Diabetes
Diabetes drug may stay, FDA panel says
Jul-31-2007
GAITHERSBURG, MD. -- A federal drug advisory committee voted overwhelmingly Monday to recommend that the diabetes drug Avandia remain on the market, even after finding that it raised the risks of heart attacks. Panel members said that studies concerning Avandia were too murky to merit drastic regulatory action and that other diabetes medicines might have similar risks. Dr. Richard Bergenstal, executive director of Park Nicollet's International Diabetes Center in Minneapolis, said diabetes
(Epizia/86399) - Type 2 diabetes IS "Full-Blown" diabetes.
Jul-30-2007
Type 2 diabetes IS "Full-Blown" diabetes.

Some doctors identify patients as "insulin resistant" or "pre-diabetic" if
their fasting blood sugar is at around 120-140 (I think that's the
"pre-diabetic" range). In those cases their sugars can sometimes be controlled
with just diet and exercise, however they will eventually need to take
medication later on. The better they take care of themselves in this
"pre-diabetic" stage, the longer they can go without needing additional medical
support for their insulin resistance.

This is not to be confused with Type 1 Diabetes, which is a completely
different disease. It is an autoimmune disorder and can only be controlled
with insulin as folks with Type 1 do not manufacture their own. It just
happens to share the same name as the other disease...but it's something else
entirely
(Epizia/86394) - Insulin resistance basically IS diabetes. Metformin is a drug for Type 2
Jul-29-2007
Insulin resistance basically IS diabetes. Metformin is a drug for Type 2
diabetes. I think it's sort of like HIV vs AIDS. High blood sugar indicates
insulin resistance, and when you reach a certain number at a fasting blood
sugar test you get slapped with the label "diabetes." But it's sort of an
inevitable continuum of the same problem. Metformin is usually prescribed when
you're closer to diabetes, and you're only given diet and exercise requirements
when you're in the "lighter" part of the continuum.

Increased energy is absolutely a side effect of getting your blood sugars back
to normal. Also you are probably less dehydrated. High blood sugars make you
tired and dehydrated. Normal blood sugars are just that: normal. You're
better able to do things when your body is in proper balance.

Congratulations on taking charge of your health and getting things under
control!
(Under The Iron Sea/86395) - I disagree, Epizia. Metformin is also a very common treatment for PCOS; just
Jul-29-2007
I disagree, Epizia. Metformin is also a very common treatment for PCOS; just
because someone is on metformin, it does not mean that they are diabetic (or
that they will necessarily become so). Granted, the basis for both PCOS and
diabetes (type II diabetes, anyhow) is insulin resistance, but they do not
necessarily co-exist. Plenty of women with PCOS do not have diabetes, and
obviously, a great portion of women with type II diabetes do not have PCOS. So
there are obviously other factors involved in the insulin resistance --> PCOS
and insulin resistance --> diabetes continuums.
Emergent Comments
Jul-30-2007
I may have mentioned this before, but I continue to be amazed and bemused by the emergence of one comment thread on this blog, Type 1 Diabetes Cure?, as a sort of clearinghouse for diabetes patients to exchange their stories and seek advice. I assume this has happened because Google has put that page high on the results list for ‘Type1 Diabetes Cure’. I usually close comments threads after a few weeks in order to keep down the robotic advertising attacks, but I intend to keep this one open as long as it has an audience....
