Cannabis Compound May Fight Lung Cancer
Apr-18-2007
BOSTON -- A U.S. study says the active ingredient in marijuana may help fight lung cancer. Harvard researcher Anju Preet says lab and mouse studies show the compound THC cut lung tumor growth in half and helped prevent the cancer from spreading, WebMD reported Wednesday. Preet said THC boots the natural anti-inflammatory properties of two specific endocannabinoids present in high amounts on lung cancer cells. THC was injected into mice that had been implanted with human lung cancer cells. Tumors shrank by about 50 percent in three weeks, compared with tumors in untreated mice, the report said. The report, presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research, says other research suggests T...

Fresh data on lung cancer are presented in the report "Comparison of inverse-planned three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy and intensity-modulated radiotherapy for non-small-cell lung cancer. Lungs are the major dose-limiting organ during radiotherapy (RT) for non-small-cell lung cancer owing to the development of pneumonitis. This study compared intensity-modulated RT (IMRT) with three-dimensional conformal RT (3D-CRT) in reducing the dose to the lungs," scientists in Sutton, the United Kingdom report. "Ten patients with localized non-small-cell lung cancer underwent computed tomography (CT). The planning target volume (PTV) was defined and the organs at risk were outlined. An inverse-planning program, AutoPlan, was used to design th...
