S. Korean Scientists Use Alternative Drug For Lung Cancer Patients
Jun-28-2007
SEOUL -- A team of South Korean scientists said Monday that patients whose lung cancer resists the well-known medication Iressa can be treated with another drug, Tarceva. The team, led by Kim Joo-hang, an professor at Yonsei University, found that Tarceva has a 26.8 per cent success rate in stopping the metastasis of cancer. The study was conducted on twenty-one non-small cell lung cancer patients who were unresponsive to Iressa. Tarceva, an anti-cancer drug, is manufactured by San Francisco-based Genentech, Inc. Japanese, U.S. Lung Cancer Victims Studied
Jun-06-2007
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- A U.S. study has determined why lung cancer drugs work better in Japanese patients than they do in U.S. lung cancer patients. A groundbreaking 2006 international study found a group of Japanese patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer survived longer -- and had a higher rate of side effects -- than U.S. patients with the same diagnosis, when both groups were given two well-known drugs for the disease. Now, a U.S. follow-up study suggests the reasons appear to lie in subtle variations in certain genes that govern how the body metabolizes chemotherapy drugs. The discovery that Japanese and U.S. patients, matched in age, gender and other respects, had differences in key metabolism-related g...
