Black Men And Prostate Cancer: A Clue
Feb-25-2007
Compared with white men, African American men are 50 percent more likely to develop prostate cancer, and twice as likely to die from it. They also tend to develop it at younger ages. Like other cancer genetics researchers, Matthew Freedman figured at least part of the explanation for this disparity must lie in the DNA. After all, defective genes that increased breast-cancer risk had been isolated in women, so it was reasonable to assume the equivalent was at work in prostate cancer. It turns out, Freedman said last week, that genetic predisposition to prostate cancer is much more complicated. Speaking at a Wistar Institute symposium on African American men and prostate cancer, Freedman explained how he and his colleagues at Dana Fa...
OHSU Cancer Institute Researcher Identifies Protein Marker For Prostate Cancer Survival
Feb-25-2007
PORTLAND -- An Oregon Health & Science University Cancer Institute researcher has identified a protein that is a strong indicator of survival for men with advanced prostate cancer. The C-reactive protein, also known as CRP, is a special type of protein produced by the liver that is elevated in the presence of inflammation. "This could mean that a simple blood test that is already available could help patients and doctors make better decisions as they become more informed about what to expect from the prostate cancer they are facing," said Tomasz Beer, M.D., director of the Prostate Cancer Research at the OHSU Cancer Institute, associate professor of medicine, (hematology/medical oncology) OHSU School of Medicine. Men's Health: Most With Low-Risk Prostate Cancer Choose Treatment
Feb-25-2007
Men with prostate cancer in its earliest stage have a tough choice: Treat the disease, even though it may never progress to be a health threat, or wait and monitor it for signs that it's spreading. Despite a low risk of spread and the potential unpleasantness of surgery, radiation therapy, or chemo, a new study finds that only a small fraction of eligible men opt for so-called watchful waiting.

New Treatments Prostate Cancer, Prostate Cancer Survival Rates
Feb-18-2007
There are approximately 25 000 men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer every year in the United Kingdom For these men the risk of dying from their prostate cancer depends on a number of risk factors For example if the cancer is confined to the prostate gland at diagnosis the chance of surviving to 5 years is 70 If the cancer has already spread e g to the bones then only 20 of men will survive to five years Of all the men who currently have prostate cancer in the UK approximately 10 000 will die of the disease each year The prostate cancer survival rate is much higher in the developed world unsurprisingly When a man is first diagnosed with prostate cancer then the doctor who has found the cancer most often a amp 8220 urologist amp 8221 amp 8212 a surgeon who specialises in looking after problems to do with the kidneys prostate and bladder will arrange a series of tests to help assess the risk for that individual patient The results of these tests will in turn help the doctor and patient to decide the best treatment for that patient

The Key Facts Behind Prostate Cancer
Feb-20-2007
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer of UK men. If it is found early and is still confined to the gland itself then the chances of survival are excellent. Modern surgical techniques, combined with drugs such as Viagra, mean that an operation to treat prostate cancer does not signal the end of a patient's sex-life. The prostate itself is a small, walnut-sized gland situated near the bladder in men that produces one component of semen. There are a broad range of prostate cancers, ...
Variation In The Definition Of Biochemical Recurrence In Patients Treated For Localized Prostate Cancer
Feb-19-2007
UroToday.com- One of the problems with prostate cancer outcomes studies is the lack of standardization in the definition of "treatment failure". Death From Below
Feb-12-2007
I was flipping through my latest copy of Triathlete Magazine and came across this ad from Athletes for a Cure. I was shocked by their proclaimed statistic. THIS YEAR, one in six American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Really? So, statistically, every six years every single man in American will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and on average a man will be diagnosed 10 times in his lifetime. Based on their claim, roughly 17 million men will be diagnosed this year. Luckily, none of this is true and it's simply some really bad copy. The one in six statistic is actually over a man's lifetime, not each year. Each year, 218,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, 27,000 will die from it. With early detection and treatment, there is a 90% survival rate. Those are still scary numbers, but it's not the black plague that the ad makes it out to be. If you're interested in donating towards fighting prostate cancer, go to the prostate cancer foundation....
